What is project rewards?
September 1, 2007 by uwrewardResearch shows that guys who have sex with guys are still being hit hard by HIV. Crystal use may play a role in the ongoing infections. For negative guys, crystal use is associated with a higher risk of getting HIV and for positive guys, it makes sticking to a regimen of HIV meds hard.
project rewards is a confidential, new program run by the University of Washington in Seattle for HIV-negative AND HIV-positive guys who use crystal and have sex with men. The goal of the project is see whether rewarding men for not using crystal helps them to slow down, cut back, or give up crystal for good.
project rewards is NOT a drug treatment program.
Who can participate?
September 1, 2007 by uwrewardproject rewards is open to HIV-positive and HIV-negative guys, aged 18+ years, who have sex with other men, and use crystal.
What will I have to do and for how long?
September 1, 2007 by uwrewardThe study will last 3 months. We will ask all guys to come back for 3 study visits, one visit every 6 weeks.
The first and third visits will include HIV and/or STD testing, urinalysis, and a computerized questionnaire about sexual behavior and drug use. These visits will take about 1 hour.
The second visit will only include urinalysis and the questionnaire. This visit should take about 30 minutes.
For these 3 visits, you will be paid for each visit whether or not your urine has meth in it.
All men will come back more frequently (2 times per week) for the 12 weeks of the study for urinalyses. These visits are in addition to the 3 study visits and will take 5-10 minutes. Guys will be rewarded if the urines provided during these short visits are clean for crystal.
